In 1922, Antonio Mancini, a hard-working grocer, found himself in a difficult situation. He had extended credit to a customer who had failed to repay the debt. When Antonio heard rumors that the man was planning to leave the United States on a ship and return to Italy without settling his account, he knew he had to act quickly.
Antonio hurried to the docks, hoping to resolve the matter before the customer disappeared. When he found the man, suitcase in hand and ticket ready, it became clear that the debt would not be repaid in cash. Instead of giving up, Antonio listened as the man offered a different form of payment: a canning machine.
